E20 petrol mandatory across the country from April 1, 2026: Know its advantages, disadvantages, advantages?

Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance

New Delhi The Central Government has made it mandatory to sell E20 Petrol (20% ethanol blended) with at least 95 RON (Research Octane Number) across the country from April 1, 2026.

The Oil Ministry has given clear instructions in the notification dated February 17 that all oil companies will sell petrol mixed with up to 20 percent ethanol as per the standards of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), with minimum Research Octane Number (RON) 95.

This rule will be applicable to all states and union territories. Let us tell you that the price of E20 petrol can be Rs 97 to Rs 106 per liter. The government has also said that under special circumstances, relaxation can be given for limited time and specific areas.

Why was this decision taken?

According to the Oil Ministry, since 2014-15, India has saved more than Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange by mixing ethanol in petrol.

Why is RON 95 necessary?

RON i.e. Research Octane Number measures the ability of the fuel to resist 'knocking'. Knocking occurs when the fuel in the engine burns unevenly, causing noise, loss of power, and can cause engine damage in the long run.

The higher the RON, the better the engine protection. The octane value of ethanol is around 108 RON, hence 20% blending improves the quality of petrol.

What is the effect on vehicles?

According to industry officials, most vehicles manufactured after 2023-25 are E20 compatible and will not face any major problems. However, in older vehicles, mileage may decrease by 3-7% and rubber or plastic parts may be slightly affected.

The government had achieved the target of 10% ethanol blending ahead of time in June 2022. After this the 20% target was reduced from 2030 to 2025-26. At present E20 is available at most petrol pumps in the country.
