Dark spot and open manhole became the reason for Birju's death. Awakening

Jagran correspondent, outer Delhi. Birju died due to a dark place and open manhole in Rohini Sector 32. On Monday night, Birju was going towards a construction site while talking to someone on his mobile phone. Due to darkness, he fell into a 20 feet deep manhole, which was filled with water up to 15 feet.

Meanwhile, the deceased's friend Suraj, who was walking 10 to 12 steps ahead, did not know about the incident. He came back to the construction site and slept. The next day, Suraj told the police that he was drunk and hence did not notice Birju falling into the drain.

When interrogated on Tuesday, he expressed suspicion that Birju had fallen into the manhole. After a five-hour search operation, Birju's body was recovered from the manhole. Begumpur police station handed over the body to his family after post-mortem on Wednesday. Birju lived in a shed at the construction site near the incident site.

On Tuesday, the police got information about Birju falling into a manhole. Police immediately reached the spot. He saw that the manhole was filled to the brim with water. He immediately informed DDA, MCD and Fire Department. Several super-sucker machines and private machinery present nearby started pumping water from the sewer line.

Water was also pumped from manholes and drains, as it was difficult for the rescue team to enter the water and find Birju. After nearly five hours of pumping water, Birju was pulled out of the 20-feet deep manhole. Birju's body was found about 24 hours after the accident.

In Rohini Sector 32, where the accident took place, the road connects to Rohini Heliport Road on one side and Begumpur village on the other. However, the population in this sector is less. Due to ongoing construction work, a large number of workers live near the site. Children from nearby colonies also come here to play.

Arman, who worked with Birju, said that the street lights were not working and more than a dozen manholes were open for a long time. After the accident, all the manholes were quickly covered overnight.

Raj Kumar Singh, who works at the construction site, said that Birju had come to work here from Gurugram only 10 days ago. He used to get Rs 600 every day for carpentry work. He lived in a shed built by the company. The accident happened about 300 meters away from here, but no one came to know about it.

Initial investigation suggests that death occurred due to falling into an open manhole. Begumpur police station has registered a case under IPC sections 285 (causing danger or obstruction in public way) and 106 (causing death by negligence) and started investigation. The police have also interrogated the deceased's friend Suraj, but till now no evidence has emerged of Suraj's involvement in the crime. Police are investigating further.
