Digital Desk, New Delhi. 90-year-old tribal artist Bhiklya Ladkya Dhinda from Palghar has been awarded Padma Shri in the 'Unsung Heroes' category of Padma Awards announced by the Central Government. Bhiklya Ladkya Dhinda has been playing 'Tarpa', a traditional musical instrument made of bamboo and gourd, since the age of 10. He has described this honor as a blessing from God.
As soon as the name of tribal artist Bhiklya Ladkya Dhinda appeared in the list of Padda Award, there was an atmosphere of celebration throughout Palghar, especially in the tribal communities of the area. This recognition of his family's 400-year-old legacy is not just an individual achievement, but a great achievement for the rich tribal art and culture of Maharashtra.
Traditional Musical Instrument 'Tarpa'
90-year-old Dhinda, considered one of the finest exponents of the Tarpa art of playing the Tarpa (a musical instrument made of gourd and bamboo), the award is the culmination of a life spent in the service of the tradition.
90-year-old tribal artist Bhiklya Ladkya Dhinda said, I have preserved my culture and worshiped God through my music. I have been playing tarpa since the age of 10. This is a 400 year old family tradition. That is why God has honored me with this award.
The tarpa, which can grow up to ten feet long, holds a central place in tribal rituals and ceremonies. Dhinda's performances have enthralled audiences in many parts of Maharashtra, earning him recognition as a patron of tribal art.
While talking to journalists, Dhinda said, 'We are poor, but our culture is our real wealth. There are 22 members in my family. I don't have any other profession. A little farming and making tarpa musical instruments are our means of livelihood. (With inputs from news agency PTI)
