State Bureau, Jammu. Congress MLA from Duru assembly constituency Ghulam Ahmed Mir has insisted on holding Panchayat and BDC (Block Development Council) elections this year. Due to not holding these elections in the state for two years, the development work is being affected, whereas earlier it was decided that Election Commission elections would be conducted for them even before their tenure ends.
While discussing the demands for grants of Agriculture, Cooperation, Horticulture, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department in the Assembly on Tuesday, Mir said that under Panchayati Raj, there is decentralization of power. When the Assembly was not formed in Jammu and Kashmir, Panchayat members used to get people's work done at the local level. Despite the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and snatching of statehood, the villagers had their own leadership.
It has been more than two and a half years since the tenure of the Panchayats ended. The tenure of BDC has also ended and the tenure of DDC is coming to an end soon. He also asked to consider increasing the funds of DDC. Said that minimum honorarium was kept for Sarpanches, Panches and BDCs.
