Jagran correspondent, Gorakhpur. Suddenly there was darkness everywhere in the planetarium area at six in the evening. While people were trying to understand the reason behind the power cut, the civil defense siren echoed in the entire area. Wardens came out on the streets and started appealing through the announcement system that there is information about the attack of the enemy country, everyone should turn off the lights of their houses and reach safe places. People were frightened by this suddenly frightening atmosphere.

Meanwhile, at 6:55 pm, a fighter plane (Jaguar) of the enemy country passed over Mahant Digvijaynath Park, bombing it. The entire area was shaken by loud explosions. In the dark, people started running here and there to save their lives. Civil defense wardens, police personnel, fire brigade and emergency services personnel reached the spot to control the situation.

People were appealed to reach the open ground and lie down on the ground and keep their ears closed. Then at 6:58 the fighter plane attacked again. There was screams all around due to repeated bombing. Many people were injured and started pleading for help. Wardens and police personnel carried the injured on stretchers and took them towards Mahant Digvijaynath Park, Circuit House and Annexe Bhawan.

The doctors present there started first aid, while the seriously injured were sent to the hospital by ambulance. The NDRF team restored emergency power supply, bringing light to the area. Fire department personnel started extinguishing the fires at various places.

Then suddenly information was received that there was a bomb lying in the park, which could explode any time. As soon as the information was received, the entire area was surrounded. Bomb disposal squad personnel reached the spot and removed the fuse of the bomb and destroyed it safely. After this everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Although this was not an incident of any real attack.

This was a blackout exercise conducted at Digvijaynath Park at 6 pm on Friday to protect against air strikes. The sensitive area was completely restricted during this exercise. Civil Defense, in collaboration with various departments, tested the preparedness for rescue, relief and coordination in case of emergency.

The purpose of the blackout was to prevent enemy pilots from identifying populated areas in the event of a possible air attack. After this, the NDRF team practiced to rescue the people trapped in the house in the annexe building. Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava, District Magistrate Deepak Meena, SSP Rajkaran Nayyar and officials of administration, police and other departments were present in this event. Describing the exercise as successful, the officials said that such exercises would be conducted regularly in future also.

There was an actual blackout in the year 1971. Chief Warden of Civil Defense Corps, Dr. Sanjeev Gulati, who organized the blackout mock drill, said that there was an actual blackout in the city in 1971 during the India-Pakistan war. It had not been practiced since then. Nearly five decades later, it was practiced by the Civil Defense on 29 April 2022 on the instructions of the Yogi government. After two years, the exercise is being carried out continuously from the year 2024. In which all the wardens of Civil Defense Corps, Fire Department, SDRF, Health Department and other department employees are included.

The warden had built small houses. In Digvijaynath Park, the warden of the first Civil Defense Corps of Macdrill had built small houses of more than half a dozen sacks. Firecrackers were fired below as the fighter plane passed overhead. Houses were set on fire. After which the teams of Civil Defense Corps, NDRF, Fire and Health Department involved in the mock drill got busy in their respective work. The whole incident seemed fine for an hour. But at seven o'clock the siren sounded again and it was said that the drill was completed and after the electricity department restored the supply, the darkness also ended.
