PM Modi gave a silver train set worth $7750 to Biden
IANS, Washington. A report by the US State Department has revealed details of expensive gifts given by Indian leaders to top US leaders. According to the report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a sterling silver train set worth $7,750 to then President Joe Biden in July 2024, which was later transferred to the National Archives.
The report was released by the State Department's Office of the Chief of Protocol and details gifts reported to various US agencies through 2024.
According to the report, the limit of “minimum value” for the year 2024 was fixed at $ 480. Details related to the White House said that on September 10, 2023, Prime Minister Modi had gifted a wooden chest, scarf, saffron, wooden box for tea to President Biden, whose estimated value was $ 562. Except for perishable items like tea and saffron, other items were handed over to the National Archives.
The report also records that First Lady Jill Biden was given a pashmina shawl worth $ 2,969 by Prime Minister Modi on October 21, 2024, which was also transferred to the National Archives.
Additionally, a Kashmiri pashmina scarf worth $599 was presented to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan by India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who was handed over to the General Services Administration (GSA). The report also has an entry for Vice President Kamala Harris.
It said that Prime Minister Modi gifted him a 'Lord Krishna Raas Leela' silver box worth $1,330 on October 18, 2024, which was transferred to the National Archives. On the same day, Prime Minister Modi also gifted cufflinks worth $585.65 to Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff.
An entry related to the Defense Department states that India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had presented a Shiva Nataraja bronze statue worth $ 3,700 to the then US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on 24 November 2022, which is currently in the process of being transferred to the GSA.
