JMM leader Amitesh Sahay shares this picture and writes - It is a matter of pride to see the CM like this to bring investment from Davos.

Digital Desk, Ranchi. These days there is a ruckus in the politics of Jharkhand regarding the jacket. A picture of Chief Minister Hemant Soren representing Jharkhand at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 Davos conference has raised the political temperature in the state. BJP has accused the Chief Minister of wearing a jacket worth lakhs and termed it as 'deception of poor people', while Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has termed it as BJP's casteist mentality and frustration.

The bitterness has once again increased in the politics of the state. BJP's Jharkhand unit shared a post targeting Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accusing him of allegedly wearing a luxury coat worth Rs 2.76 lakh during a foreign trip.

The post said that the people of the state are struggling with poverty, but the CM is roaming around in expensive clothes in the name of 'Investors Trip'. This post is going viral on social media platform X, after which a series of reactions have started from both for and against.

The bone of contention: What is that jacket?

BJP Jharkhand (@BJP4Jharkhand) shared a graphic on social media platforms FB and X, in which the jacket worn by the Chief Minister has been described as 'Chelsea Heritage Trench Coat' by luxury brand Burberry. BJP claims that the price of this coat is approximately $3,040 (about Rs 2.76 lakh). BJP sarcastically wrote, "Hemant ji is doing wonders, the people of Jharkhand are forced to live a life of poverty and helplessness and you are roaming abroad wearing a coat worth lakhs in the name of investors' trip." Calling it 'hypocrisy' of the Chief Minister, the opposition raised questions as to how the head of a poor state can adopt such an expensive lifestyle.

JMM's counterattack: 'BJP irritated by progress of tribal leader'

JMM has completely rejected these allegations and called them false rumours. Party's central spokesperson Kunal Sarangi gave a sharp reply saying that BJP is stunned to see a tribal politician with confidence on the global stage. He said, they don't even know the real brand of the jacket the Chief Minister is wearing, they just want to divert attention from the big issues of investment by spreading rumours. JMM leader Amitesh Sahay writes - Condemnation on Davos branded overcoat of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and MLA Kalpana Soren on social media? This is a very shameful caste based frustration. Is it a crime to wear a warm coat in minus seven degree cold? Why silence on branded suits and watches worth lakhs of central leaders? Criticize policy, not clothes! Don't tribal leaders have the right to wear nice clothes?

Party supporters' argument on internet media

Similar looking jackets are available in the market for less than $100.

Debate broke out on social media

This issue has been divided into two factions on the internet.

Political meaning: what experts say

Senior journalist Shambhunath Chaudhary says, this dispute in Jharkhand is not limited to clothes only. Through this issue, the BJP wants to project the image of Hemant Soren as a rich and disconnected leader, especially amid allegations that he is being investigated by the ED in the land scam and disproportionate assets case.

At the same time, JMM is presenting it by linking it to tribal identity. The party believes that the BJP is unable to tolerate that a tribal Chief Minister is leading the state at international forums. Chaudhary does not justify this issue. Political analyst Omprakash Ashk also says that this entire controversy is unnecessary. There is no dearth of issues in Jharkhand. There should be discussion on them. Only time will tell to what extent the investment promises returned from the Davos trip will materialise. At present, the politics of the state seems to be limited to this expensive coat. This is not correct. This should be avoided in the interest of clean politics and the state.
