State Bureau, Jammu. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta said that necessary steps are being taken to ensure necessary administrative, infrastructure and human resource arrangements for the smooth functioning of the five new districts formed in the state.
The formation of these five long-awaited new districts will bring governance closer to the people, improve access to essential services and help eliminate long-standing developmental disparities in the difficult geographical region of Ladakh.
On August 25, in line with people's demand, the Central Government had approved five new districts for Ladakh—Changthang, Zanskar, Nubra, Sham and Dras, increasing the number of districts in the Union Territory to seven. Speaking to a delegation led by Counselor Chhe Stanzin Lakpa, the Lieutenant Governor said that the UT administration is fully committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Ladakh.
The delegation pointed out that people in these areas face serious hardships due to long distances, harsh climate and limited administrative access. The delegation stressed that the establishment of fully fledged districts will strengthen governance at the grassroots level, improve delivery of public services, strengthen disaster management mechanisms and promote inclusive development while preserving the unique cultural and ecological identity of Ladakh.
Lieutenant Governor Gupta reiterated that the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to the overall development of Ladakh and is especially sensitive to the aspirations of the people living in remote and border areas.
He said the formation of five new districts reflects the Central Government's resolve to ensure decentralized administration, better service delivery and balanced and inclusive development. He said that the new districts have been formed with the objective of empowerment of local communities, regional balanced development and strengthening the administration of border areas.
He also clarified that the process of consultation with stakeholders will continue to ensure that this change is people-centric and in line with local needs.
