Digital Desk, New Delhi. Heavy snowfall and heavy rains in Afghanistan for the last three days have caused huge devastation. So far 61 people have died and 110 people have been injured in this disaster. Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) gave this information on Saturday.

According to officials, these deaths occurred in the central and northern provinces of the country between Wednesday and Friday. 458 houses have been completely or partially damaged due to the weather. 360 families have been affected by this disaster. An ANDMA spokesperson has appealed to people not to travel unnecessarily on snow-covered roads.

Lives lost due to avalanche, roof collapse and cold

Officials said most of the deaths were due to roof collapse and avalanches. Many people also died due to cold in sub-zero temperatures. Six children died after the roof of a house collapsed in the southern province of Kandahar. This accident happened during strong wind and heavy rain.

Salang Highway, an important road in Afghanistan, has been closed. This road connects the capital Kabul with the northern provinces. Traffic has come to a complete standstill due to the closure of the road. Food items were distributed to travelers stranded on a mountain pass in the central province of Bamiyan.

Additionally, the transmission line bringing electricity from Uzbekistan has been damaged, disrupting power supply in about 12 provinces. According to the electricity department, technical teams are ready, but due to closure of Salang Pass they are not able to reach the spot.

If there is no preparation then even natural rain becomes a disaster

Kabul Times newspaper wrote in its editorial that if snow and rain are handled properly, they are beneficial for the environment and livelihood of the country. But due to lack of preparation and timely help, these natural events become major tragedies.

According to the United Nations, almost half of Afghanistan's population of more than 40 million will need humanitarian aid this year. Decrease in foreign aid and frequent natural disasters are adding to the problems of the people.
