Ongoing work of Rigo Bridge.
Jagran correspondent, Amritsar. Firozpur Railway has again issued a new date for preparing the old Rigo Bridge and handing it over to the people of Amritsar city. In the press note issued, Firozpur Railway Division has said that the bridge will be ready by October 2026.
It will be opened to the public in 2026. This bridge, built during the British rule in 1905, was closed in 2023 after being declared unsafe. Earlier it was the main route for traffic of Amritsar. The Rigo Bridge connected the old and new parts of the city for a long time.
Before its closure, more than one lakh people used to pass through it every day. When the work started in 2023, the Railways had said that it would be completed by 2025. But time passed, the work is still incomplete. Due to this the traffic of the city has worsened a lot.

Big burden on Bhandari Bridge
Due to closure of the bridge, all the traffic went to Bhandari Bridge. There is a lot of vehicles there. There are long traffic jams every day in many areas of the city. Office goers, students, shopkeepers and patients are all facing problems every day. People say that due to this the functioning of the city is coming to a halt.
Firozpur Railway officials say that it is not easy to build a bridge on a moving railway track. Before demolishing the old bridge, 11 KV power lines of PSPCL had to be removed. Besides, sewer, water pipeline, rail signal, telecom cable and fiber optic were also shifted to other places. These works caused delays. Now the old slab is being removed by diamond cutting.

A new but stronger bridge will be built
According to the Railways, the narrow and weak bridge of British times will be removed and a wide and strong bridge will now be built. It will connect two big parts of the city. Therefore it is very important to open it. People are hoping that the work will be done by October 2026. If there is delay again, the traffic problem will increase further.
