Roadmap For Digital Census 2027 Ready: First Phase Will Start From April 1, 2026, 33 Questions Will Be Asked

Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Central Government has taken important steps for the census to be held in 2027. In the notification issued on Thursday, a list of 33 questions has been issued for the first phase (house listing), which includes details like condition of the house, family information, vehicle ownership, internet facility, source of drinking water, toilet, LPG connection and staple grains. The head of the family will have to provide this information.

This census will be held in two phases

Phase I (House Listing and Housing Census): 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2026. During this period, data regarding listing of houses, construction material, ownership, basic facilities etc. will be collected. The work will be completed in a period of 30 days in each State/UT. The option of self-enumeration (filling of online self-information) will also be available 15 days before the start of listing.

Second phase (Population census): In February 2027, in which population, caste, religion, education, employment etc. will be counted.

This time the census will be completely digital. Around 30 lakh employees will collect data through mobile apps (both Android and iOS), which will transfer in real-time. This will be the first time that caste enumeration will be included after independence (first time since 1931).

Help in disaster management - Geo-tagging will provide accurate relief in incidents like floods, earthquakes or cloud bursts, the number of people living in houses will be known immediately. Help in delimitation - better determination of boundaries of parliamentary/assembly constituencies, ensuring rural-urban balance. Urban planning easier - data useful in planning schools, hospitals, parks etc., emergency services faster in areas with kutcha houses. Urbanization and migration tracking - map changes in the next census will increase the urbanization rate and Migration patterns will be clearly visible. Voter list will be accurate – Geo-tagging and Aadhaar linking will remove duplicate names, making the voter list stronger.

India's population was approximately 121 crore in the 2011 census. Now in 2027, this will be the world's largest digital census, which will play an important role in policy-making, development plans and resource distribution.
