New Delhi. Share Market On Budget: Today is Sunday, date 1 February and year 2026. India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the country's general budget for the financial year 2026-27 today. Therefore, today is a very important day for India from the economic point of view. Even though today is Sunday, the stock market is open today because of the budget.
Today both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), as well as commodity markets, will hold a special live trading session, allowing investors and traders to react to the Budget announcements in real time.
"Due to the presentation of the Union Budget, members are requested to note that the Exchange will conduct live trading sessions as per standard market time (9:15 am to 3:30 pm) on February 01, 2026," NSE had said in a circular on January 16.
Stock market is open today because of budget
Stock markets in India are usually closed for trading on Saturdays and Sundays with MCX and NCDEX being closed for trading. Barring special circumstances like the Union Budget this year, all exchanges operate between Monday and Friday every week.
High volatility is expected on all exchanges on Budget day as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to make important announcements regarding several sectors, policy, import duty and personal tax. Budget announcements may impact commodity prices and may also lead to market fluctuations.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026 in the Lok Sabha at 11 am. This will be his ninth consecutive budget presentation, one of the longest uninterrupted tenure by a finance minister.
Today, along with NSE and BSE, Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) are also open for commodity trading.
"Due to the presentation of the Union Budget, a special live trading session will be held on Sunday, February 01, 2026," MCX had said in a circular on January 16.
