Digital Desk, New Delhi. China recently demonstrated the capability of its electromagnetic catapult system on an aircraft carrier. This system has been installed on Beijing's third and most advanced aircraft carrier Fujian, so that fighter jets can be launched and stopped in a few seconds.

According to a report by Global Times, this system is based on the US carrier class, Gerald R. Same as Ford's system. It uses the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) instead of a steam catapult.

What is its specialty?

A social media post said that this catapult system has shown its high burst power by giving a speed of 170 mph to a 30 ton fighter jet and stopping it in 0.2 seconds. However this cannot be confirmed. The special thing is that modern carrier arresting systems usually stop the aircraft in about 2-3 seconds.

This system is being considered as a game-changer for the capabilities of the Chinese Navy. It is a major upgrade over the traditional steam catapult and can be easily configured to launch both light and heavy aircraft.

A Bloomberg report states that it has been tested with J-35 stealth fighter jet, J-15T heavy fighter jet and KJ-600 early warning aircraft.

How does this system work?

The catapult system helps precisely regulate ejection force, allowing carrier-based aircraft to perform short-range takeoffs with full fuel and weapons loads. The electromagnetic catapult system improves the carrier's combat performance by increasing the sortie efficiency of carrier-based aircraft.

This system was recently seen in a viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter). The caption read, "Can an electromagnetic method bring a speed of 170 mph to 0 in 0.2 seconds? China's new electromagnetic arresting device stopped a 30-ton fighter jet traveling at a speed of 170 mph in 0.2 seconds."
