Lakshya Chaudhary, Ghaziabad. The sewage treatment plants (STPs) installed in many residential societies of the city are not as per the capacity prescribed in the environmental clearance (EC). It is alleged that these STPs are neither able to completely treat the sewage water generated nor meet the environmental standards. Allegations have been made that STPs are being installed against the capacity in many societies of Rajnagar Extension, Crossing Republic and NH-9 area of the city.

Under this, it is mandatory for builders to install STP of adequate capacity depending on the total area of the society and the number of flats, but despite this, it has been claimed that STP of lesser capacity has been installed in many projects. The societies' Apartment Owners Association (AOA) alleges that the builders circumvented the rules in connivance with the concerned departments.

STP of 70 KLD instead of 500 KLD

Gaur Cascades AOA Secretary Puneet Goyal says that an STP of 500 KLD capacity was to be installed in the society, but a small STP of only 70 KLD capacity has been installed at the spot. This plant is completely incapable of treating the sewage generated in the society. In this matter, a complaint has also been lodged by AOA in Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board.

Allegation of insufficient capacity in Aditya World City also

Dr Shiv Kumar, AOA President of Aditya World City Sector-1, 2, 3 and 4, alleged that the capacity of the STP is very less in proportion to the estimated population of the township. According to the approved layout, the estimated population of the township is shown as 1,57,095, but the STP was not constructed accordingly. STP was proposed on 3,591.5 square meter land in Sector-3, whereas till now STP has been developed in only 237 square meter area. However, the builder side says that the population of the township has been shown as 57,495 in the EIA report and the STP is being established and operated accordingly.
