The government on Thursday told Parliament that it will not take into account the impact of US sanctions or recent changes in tariff policies on India's participation in the Chabahar project.

PTI, New Delhi. The government told Parliament on Thursday that it is in "constant touch" with all concerned to address the impact of US sanctions or recent changes in tariff policies on India's participation in the Chabahar project.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had asked the government whether it had assessed such results. The Congress leader had also asked about the funds allocated and spent by India on the development and operation of the Chabahar port project in Iran in the last five years.
"As per the main contract signed between India Ports Global Limited and the Ports and Maritime Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran for equipping and operating the Shahid Beheshti Terminal of Chabahar Port on May 13, 2024, India has fulfilled its commitment to contribute $120 million for the procurement of essential port-related equipment," Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a written reply.
He further informed that the last installment was transferred on August 26, 2025. Kharge had also asked the Ministry of External Affairs whether there were any diplomatic interactions with the US or other relevant partners regarding India's participation in the Chabahar port project in the last two years.
He had sought details of "emergency plans" under consideration for continuing India's participation in the project. Keeping a close eye on the situation in Iran In a written reply to a question, Kirti Vardhan Singh also said that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation in Iran and there is no news of any Indian citizen going missing or being killed during the recent protests.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran is in regular touch with Indian nationals including students in Iran and is providing them appropriate guidance. 3,800 Indians deported from US The government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that more than 3,800 Indian citizens were deported from the US in 2025.
These figures include 3,414 Indians deported via Washington till mid-December. Population of Asiatic lions increased: Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh said in reply to a written question that the population of Asiatic lions in the country has increased from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025.
He said, “As per information received from Gujarat, the lion population has made its habitat in new areas like notified forest areas, river corridors and barren lands.”
