Digital transformation of electricity distribution in Uttar Pradesh
Digital Desk, Lucknow. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is now not only the largest state in the country but is also leading technological innovation in the energy sector. The year 2025 has proved to be a milestone of 'transparency and digital transformation' for the power system of the state. Smart metering and widespread expansion of solar power have not only reduced revenue losses but also created an accountable system keeping the interests of consumers at the forefront. UP has today emerged as a role model for the country in preventing electricity theft through smart metering and providing green energy to every home through 'PM Surya Ghar' scheme.
Smart Metering: A New Era of Transparency
About 68,24,654 smart meters have been installed so far in Uttar Pradesh, while a total of 3.09 crore meters have been approved. It is not just a device but a symbol of consumer confidence. Now consumers are getting freedom from estimate based bills and are getting accurate bills based on actual consumption. In the words of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, "The smart metering system is a confluence of our accountability towards the consumer and digital reforms."
Improved supply through DT and feeder metering
To modernize power distribution, the Yogi government has emphasized on Distribution Transformer (DT) metering. More than 2.29 lakh DT meters have been installed so far, which has achieved great success in identifying and preventing line loss. Along with this, the installation of 25,224 feeder meters has strengthened the supply network so much that there has been unprecedented improvement in the quality and reliability of power in rural and urban areas.
Double benefit of solar energy and bill relief scheme
UP is working rapidly not only on power distribution but also on new options for production. Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, 3,20,187 solar energy installations have been completed so far in the state, which is taking the state towards self-reliant energy. At the same time, 'Electricity Bill Relief Scheme' has proved to be a lifesaver for the consumers struggling with outstanding bills. More than 16 lakh consumers have registered in this scheme, out of which more than 6 lakh people are connected to Purvanchal Discom alone. The government has received revenue of ₹1323 crore from this initiative.
Consumer empowered by technology
Bringing the vision of Digital India to the ground, now electricity consumers of UP can see real-time consumption on their mobile. Online payments and transparent billing have reduced disputes and led to significant growth in revenue collection.
