Digital Desk, New Delhi. German authorities have arrested five people suspected of being extremist Islamists planning an attack on a Christmas market in southern Bavaria, police and prosecutors said in a joint statement.
Germany has been hit by a series of vehicle-ramming attacks since an Islamist drove a hijacked truck into a Christmas market in central Berlin in 2016. Several people were killed in an attack in Magdeburg last December.
What was said in the statement?
Three Moroccan nationals, aged 22, 28 and 30, an Egyptian national, 56, and a Syrian national, 37, were detained on Friday at the Suben border crossing between Germany and Austria, according to a joint statement issued late Saturday night.
What did investigators find?
The statement said investigators believed the men intended to drive into a crowded market in the Dingolfing-Landau area, killing or injuring as many people as possible, and authorities suspected an Islamic motive.
