The flyover built at a cost of Rs 125 crore fell into disrepair in just 11 years.

Saurabh Pandey, East Delhi. In 2014, when the construction of the flyover started at Natthu Colony Chowk, people were happy that now they would get relief from the jam. No one had thought that the flyover built at a cost of Rs 125 crore would become dilapidated in just 11 years.

The flyover built for convenience has become the biggest inconvenience for the people living here. Now people say that Rs 125 crore of their tax should be recovered from the responsible officials who wasted it. It should be rebuilt with the same money. People had to face traffic jams for hours at a time on the railway line built between Durgapuri Chowk and Nand Nagari. In view of this, Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) had built this flyover in the year 2015. After a year it was handed over to the Public Works Department (PWD). After just two years, the flyover itself started falling into disrepair. Cracks started appearing in it and construction material started falling from the slab. After complaints from the people, the entry of heavy vehicles was stopped in the year 2019.

Failed in technical test, all slabs will be made again

Recently conducted technical investigation and load test revealed that the structure of the flyover is not as per the standards. Weaknesses were found in the deck slab and other parts, after which it was not considered safe. Due to this, the Public Works Department is now considering demolishing it and rebuilding it. According to officials, the entire flyover will be constructed afresh except the pillars.

Flyover became an inconvenience

Since the beginning of its construction in 2013, the movement of buses and other vehicles was stopped here. Due to narrowing of the road during the construction of the flyover, people had to face severe traffic jam for almost three years. During this period, people faced a lot of problems due to non-operation of buses.

There was some relief when the flyover started in 2015, but in 2019, due to the ban on heavy vehicles, buses stopped running. Many routes including DTC route number 333, 205, 33 were diverted. Now that its construction is being talked about again, people will face inconvenience for three years again.

MLA said, money should be recovered from those responsible

MLA Jitendra Mahajan had filed a public interest litigation in the High Court in January 2025 in the matter. Only after the order of the High Court, the officials took cognizance of the dilapidated flyover and got it investigated. MLA Jitendra Mahajan said that the flyover should be rebuilt by recovering money from the corrupt officials who built it in the Aam Aadmi Party government. Vigilance investigation is also going on in the matter and if any corrupt leader is also involved in this along with the officials, action will be taken.
