Digital Desk, New Delhi. The US Supreme Court has declared President Donald Trump's tariff policy illegal. After this, the turmoil in Washington politics has intensified. The Republican Party is now considering further strategy after this decision.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson has given a balanced statement. He did not directly criticize the court's decision, but definitely supported Trump's policy.
Johnson wrote on social media platform X that America has benefited millions of dollars from Trump's tariffs. According to him, this strengthened America's trading position and helped in making better deals.
Defense of Trump's 'America First' policy
Speaker Johnson said the tariffs imposed under Trump's 'America First' policy helped create balanced trade agreements with countries that have long taken advantage of American workers. He also said that because of these tariffs America came into a stronger position in global trade. However, he refrained from reacting sharply to the Supreme Court's decision.
Johnson indicated that Congress and the administration will now work together to decide the way forward in the coming weeks. He indicated that the Republican Party can bring a new law in Parliament to legally strengthen this policy.
Why did the Supreme Court cancel the policy?
The US Supreme Court rejected Trump's tariff policy by a majority of 6-3. The court said that Trump misused the 1977 law International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Under this law, the President gets some economic powers only in case of national emergency. The court says that only the US Parliament i.e. Congress has the right to impose or remove tariffs.
After the decision, the question has now arisen whether the Republican Party will try to give a legal basis to Trump's tariff policy by bringing a new bill in Parliament. The situation on this may become clear in the coming weeks.
