Digital Desk, New Delhi. There is great turmoil in Iran. The protests, which began with a shopkeepers' strike in Tehran on December 28, have quickly spread to many cities. At first voices were raised against inflation and economic stagnation, but soon these turned into a big anti-government movement. At least 27 people have been killed so far in clashes with security forces. Five minors are also included in this. Norway-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights has given these figures.
Seeing the situation of the protesters becoming serious, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran. In a post on Truth Social, he said that if Iran violently kills peaceful protesters, as is its habit, the US will come to their aid. Trump did not specify what form the aid would take, nor did he announce any immediate military or economic steps. However, the US maintains a large military presence in the region.
Iran's strong response to Trump's warning
Trump's statement increased the tension further. Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, has written a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and members of the Security Council. In this he demanded strong condemnation of Trump's 'reckless and provocative' statements. Iravani has called it a serious violation of the UN Charter and international law.
Iranian officials accused America of instigating the protests. He warned that any intervention would destabilize the region and harm US interests.
'Make Iran Great Again' cap causes stir
Meanwhile, a picture came to light that further fueled the tension. In this, Trump is holding a cap written 'Make Iran Great Again' along with Senator Lindsey Graham, on which he also signed. This photo is of late Sunday night, when both were going from Florida to Washington in Air Force One.
Earlier in an interview, Graham had advocated the change of Iran's government with this hat. After the picture went viral, a debate broke out in Washington on American foreign policy. Democrats have called it a very dangerous provocation.
Last time America attacked Iran
In June last year, America, along with Israel, bombed Iran's three main nuclear sites. In response, Iran fired missiles at the US airbase in Doha. Trump has since warned that if Iran rebuilds its nuclear program or missile capabilities, it would lead to new conflict.
He said, "Now we hear that Iran is trying to rebuild, so we will have to bring them down again. We will bring them down badly."
