Pipraich Sugar Mill. Awakening
Jagran correspondent, Gorakhpur. Piperaich Sugar Mill, which produces sulphurless sugar, will also produce ethanol in the coming days. For this, a distillery will be set up in the sugar mill. On Wednesday, the Yogi government has made a provision of Rs 25 crore in the budget for the financial year 2026-27.
The production capacity of this distillery will be 120 kilo liters per day. However, funds were also provided in the previous two budgets. With ethanol production, sugarcane price payment to farmers will be faster. Besides this, nearby youth will also get employment.
A private sector sugar mill was established in Pipraich in 1932. It was acquired in 1974 and after running for a few years, the mill closed in 1999. As MP, Yogi Adityanath always raised his voice for running the closed mills. But, the then governments remained blind to this issue of public concern.
After taking charge of the state in 2017, Yogi won the hearts of the farmers by announcing a new sugar mill in the premises of the closed mill. On November 17, 2019, he got the mill installed in record time and inaugurated the crushing season. Apart from making sugar from sugarcane, this mill also generates electricity from its by-product.
On December 9, 2020, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the sulfurless sugar plant at Pipraich Sugar Mill and recognized it as a model mill. The capacity of this mill is to crush 50 thousand quintals of sugarcane per day, which is six times more than the old sugar mill.
Apart from this, the Chief Minister had also talked about setting up a distillery in Pipraich Sugar Mill. Now that too has been completed. On Wednesday, in the state government's budget, once again a provision of Rs. 120 kilo liter per day capacity has been made for a distillery plant. With this, a plant for making ethanol directly from sugarcane juice can be set up in the sugar mill. After the budget released earlier, a tender was issued. The state government has released the budget for the ethanol plant for the third consecutive time. An action plan was made in the budget released for the year 2024-25. Due to some reasons it could not get off the ground. Then a provision of Rs 90 crore was made in the budget released in the year 2025-26. Tenders were floated thrice in a year, but the plant could not be started.
Later, in view of the low productivity of sugar, higher officials also included coarse grains in making ethanol. By then time passed. Once again the budget for the ethanol plant has been released in the budget for the year 2026-27. This has created a wave of happiness among the farmers and youth.
