Digital Desk, New Delhi. Controversy arose over the ban on non-veg food in Koraput district of Odisha. Most of the tribal population lives in Koraput district of southern Odisha. Known for its hilly areas and different types of mineral deposits, this district probably comes in the headlines every now and then.

But, recently, a controversy arose regarding the ban on non-veg here. This ban was not imposed for religious reasons, but was imposed by the District Magistrate on the occasion of 77th Republic Day.

In a letter to tehsildars, BDOs and executive officers, District Magistrate Manoj Satyavan Mahajan yesterday directed them to enforce the ban in their respective areas.

District Magistrate withdrew the order

The order said that they will have to issue an official notification to ban the sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs and other non-veg food items. However, this notification did not last long and was not possible to survive because studies show that less than 3 percent of the population of Odisha eats vegetarian food. After public protest, the order of non-veg ban was finally withdrawn today.

The District Magistrate, in a new notification, clarified that the first ban order was issued solely on the suggestion of the District Level Republic Day Preparation Committee and assured that it has been withdrawn with immediate effect.
