Lifestyle Desk, New Delhi. The trend of retinoid is increasing on social media. Be it reducing wrinkles, preventing acne or improving skin complexion, retinoids are effective on every front. However, along with so many benefits, its biggest challenge is its potency.
If not used properly, it can cause irritation, dryness and redness in the skin. If you are going to use retinoid for the first time, then it is very important for you to keep these 5 basic rules in mind.
Start with a low concentration
Retinoids come in many types and strengths. Using the strongest form the first time can be harmful to the skin. Always start with a lower percentage of retinol (like 0.1% or 0.2%). Let your skin get used to this new ingredient. As your skin begins to tolerate it, you can gradually increase its concentration.
If your skin is sensitive, then the sandwich method can prove to be a boon for you. In this, you first apply a thin layer of moisturizer on the face, apply retinoid on top of it, and again apply a layer of moisturizer on top. This technology slightly reduces direct exposure to the retinoid, significantly reducing the risk of irritation and dryness.
It is important to apply sunscreen
Retinoid helps in cell turnover i.e. formation of new cells. Therefore your skin becomes very sensitive towards the sun's rays. Always apply it at night only. Also, don't forget to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30 or higher the next day, even if it's cloudy or you're indoors. Using retinoids without sunscreen can damage your skin instead of helping it.
Retinoids are not overnight magic. It may take 3 to 6 months to see its benefits. In the beginning, apply it only two or three times a week. When you feel that there is no irritation in the skin, then gradually start using it daily. Remember, haste in skin care often backfires.
Do not mix with other active ingredients
Keep your routine simple when applying retinoid. Do not use actives like vitamin C, glycolic acid or salicylic acid on the night you are applying retinoid. Mixing all of these together can break your skin barrier, causing your face to become red or itchy.
