Lifestyle Desk, New Delhi. Many times we apply any oil without understanding our hair type, which increases hair fall instead of stopping it. Yes, not every shiny bottle available in the market is good for your hair. Next time before buying hair oil, keep these 5 things in mind.

stay away from mineral oil

First of all, read the ingredients written on the back of the oil bottle. If it says 'Mineral Oil' or 'Liquid Paraffin' at the top, put it back on the shelf immediately. This is a cheap oil made from petroleum which forms a plastic-like layer on your scalp. Due to this, the hair roots are unable to breathe and the hair starts breaking. Always choose natural oil.

Not every oil is for everyone. If your hair is very thin and light, coconut oil or castor oil will weigh it down, causing it to stretch and break. For thin hair, choose a 'light oil' like almond oil or argan oil. Use heavy oil only if the hair is thick and dry.

Don't fall into the trap of scent

We often open the lid and smell the fragrance of the oil and if we like the fragrance, we buy it. Remember, a very strong scent means it has 'artificial perfume' and alcohol added to it. These chemicals can cause itching and allergies in your scalp, which can increase hair fall. The fragrance of genuine Ayurvedic or pure oils is very mild and natural.

If you have dandruff then stay away from oil

This is the biggest mistake we make. If you have dandruff on your scalp, applying oil is like adding 'ghee to the fire'. Dandruff is caused by a type of fungus which grows rapidly by eating oil. If you have dandruff, first treat it with a medicated shampoo, or use oils containing 'Neem' and 'Tea-tree oil'.

'Cold pressed' is the best

The cheap oils available in the market are extracted by applying a lot of heat in machines, due to which their nutrients are lost. Try to always buy raw ghani oil. It is a bit expensive, but it retains the original properties of the oil and vitamins which provide proper nutrition to your hair.

Hair care is important, but do not apply oil indiscriminately. Understand the needs of your hair and choose the right oil. Remember, right oil is the protector of hair, but wrong oil can also become their destroyer.
