There is going to be a speed up in the recovery of Rs 959 crore 91 lakh 50 thousand from the rural consumers of the state in the form of water and sewer bills of both urban and rural consumers for two years. From December 2023 till now, Rs 959 crore 91 lakh 50 thousand will be recovered from 38 lakh 37 thousand 119 consumers of the state.
Out of these, an amount of Rs 209 crore 10 lakh 84 thousand is outstanding towards 28 lakh 41 thousand 418 rural consumers. However, urban consumers are lagging behind rural consumers in not paying bills and the Public Health Department has shown outstanding drinking water and sewer bill amount of Rs 750 crore 65 lakh 52 thousand towards 995691 consumers. The noteworthy thing here is that till now bill collection has not started in rural areas.
There was a proposal to do the bill collection work through Panchayats, which was stopped recently. Because of this, recovery could not start in rural areas. Now the Public Health Department is going to start recovery at its own level. Under these circumstances, for the first time in the state, water and sewer bills are going to be collected in rural areas. The Public Health Department has also set three-month targets for water and sewer bill collection.
According to the target of the department, 33% recovery is to be done in January, 33% in February and 34% in March. It remains to be seen how effective the new system will prove to be in the state. Let us clarify here that except Faridabad, drinking water and sewerage system in all other districts of the state is with the Public Health Department. Mahendragarh is the only district in South Haryana which does not have sewer system in its rural areas. Regarding this, Department Director Jaswant Singh said that the work of bill recovery is part of the normal process.
