Rajendra B. Aklekar, Mumbai. Shooting of films and advertisements is no longer limited to just entertainment, but Railways are also earning good income from it. Western Railway has earned a record Rs 1.72 crore through film and advertisement shooting.
A railway official said that stations, trains and other railway premises under Western Railways are made available for shooting films, TV serials, web series and advertisements. Shooting is permitted from time to time in mail/express trains as well as in suburban local trains.
Shooting in stations, platforms, yards and other railway premises gives filmmakers real and vibrant locations, making their scenes look more real.
Shooting process made easier
Western Railways has simplified and expedited the process of granting permission for shooting. Now under the 'single window system' the production house has to apply at only one place.
After this, all the remaining necessary railway permissions and approvals are completed by the Public Relations (PR) department. Railways has also clarified that safety, train operations and passenger convenience are given utmost priority during shooting.
Along with passenger and freight earnings, Western Railways is making new efforts to increase non-fare earnings. Earning from film shooting is being considered a big initiative in this direction.
Till February 15, 2026, Western Railways earned about Rs 1.72 crore from film shooting, which is about 25% more than last year. Earlier in 2022-23, about Rs 1.64 crore was earned, which was the best performance at that time. Due to this continuously increasing income, Western Railway has become one of the major railway zones of the country which are earning well from film shooting.
Shooting for the first time in 'Vande Bharat'
It is also special that for the first time, film shooting was allowed inside India's most modern and premium train Vande Bharat Express. This decision gave the film industry an opportunity to use the world class railway infrastructure. Besides, it also reflects the modern and progressive vision of Western Railways.
