Digital Desk, New Delhi. Today i.e. on 7th February, Saturday, drivers associated with Ola, Uber and Rapido across the country have announced to stop work. Drivers associated with Uber and Rapido will keep their mobile apps closed. Due to which people will not be able to book car, auto or bike-taxi online. People may have to face problems due to this.
Actually, Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has announced this strike in collaboration with national labor organizations. This strike has been named 'All India Breakdown',
Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), while sharing information about this strike on social media platform X, wrote, App-based transport workers across India will do All India Breakdown on 7 February 2026. No minimum fare. No regulation. Endless exploitation.'
Why are you on strike?
Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union says that neither their fare is fixed nor any rules, they are just being exploited. This union has written a letter to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding this.
Cab drivers say that there is no fixed rate by the government, hence the companies deduct the money as per their wish. It was written in the letter, 'Lakhs of transport workers are insecure about their income because the fares are fixed by the companies themselves, which leads to exploitation and poor working conditions.'
The union has appealed to the government to take action. The union claims millions of app-based drivers are being pushed into poverty, while aggregator companies are raking in profits.
Installing panic button will increase the burden
In a statement, Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha said drivers of app-based taxis and auto rickshaws across the country will observe a nationwide one-day strike on February 7 to protest against the "arbitrary" fare policies of bike taxi services and ride aggregators like Ola, Uber and Rapido. He claimed that the installation of mandatory panic buttons has placed a financial burden on drivers.
Being forced to install panic device
According to the statement issued by Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, 140 panic button device providers have been approved by the Central Government, with the State Government declaring around 70 per cent of these companies as unauthorized. As a result, cab drivers are being forced to unnecessarily spend around Rs 12,000 for removing already installed devices and installing new devices, causing them severe financial hardship.
The drivers' association also expressed concern over the loss of income due to increase in the number of auto rickshaws under the open permit policy and also alleged that victims of accidents involving illegal bike taxis are being denied insurance benefits. (With inputs from news agency PTI)
