Why Trump's US targeted Gautam Adani, from Hindenburg to SEC and WSJ; Trying to break through allegations?

New Delhi. America has gone after Gautam Adani with all its might. It is not us, but the American firms or the government institutions there are making such allegations. This is what is being proved by these allegations. Now the issue of Wall Street Journal is in the headlines. In fact, in June last year, this newspaper had published a news about Gautam Adani, in which allegations were made against the Adani Group. Now on the same allegations, Adani Enterprises, while giving information in its exchange filing, said that it is in talks with the Foreign Assets Office of America in this matter.

Adani Enterprises said it had received a request for information from the Foreign Assets Office on February 4. "There is no evidence of any irregularities or non-compliance with the rules in this communication," it said.

A June 2025 Wall Street Journal report alleged that Gautam Adani asked the U.S. to drop foreign bribery charges. Demanded intervention. The newspaper had published whether Adani's companies had broken the ban by importing Iranian LPG through Mundra Port. Adani Group now in U.S. Is in talks with the Office of Foreign Assets (OFAC). This is not the first case when allegations have been made against Adani Group in America. Let us know about the major allegations that American organizations had made against Adani Group.

In such a situation, the question arises whether America is deliberately targeting Indian billionaire Gautam Adani? Or is he trying to weaken Adani Group by making allegations?

Major allegations made against Adani Group by American organizations

These are three such allegations which were leveled against Adani Group. The first allegation was made by a firm named Hindenburg Research, which was closed in January 2023. In January 2023, American research firm Hindenburg created a stir across the world by publishing a report on Adani Group. He had alleged that Adani Group had committed the biggest fraud in corporate history. The firm was openly accused of stock manipulation, accounting fraud and misusing offshore shell NTT to inflate asset values and debt. The report suggested a loss of more than $100B in market value.

After the Hindenburg report, there was a huge fall in the shares of Gautam Adani. Within days of the report, the market value of Adani Group's stocks fell by more than $100 billion.

The Supreme Court had said in this case that apart from the investigation by the market regulator, there will be no other investigation on the Adani Group, which brought great relief to the group. After this, SEBI had given clean chit to Adani Group in this matter.

Following Hindenburg's allegations in 2023, 24, an American government agency accused the Adani Group of winning the contract by paying bribes. The US SEC had filed official civil fraud charges against Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani and officials of Adani Green in November 2024.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission alleged large-scale bribery in obtaining solar contracts by making false statements to investors. The case involves alleged bribery in excess of $250M, and is also pending separate federal criminal charges.

In this case, US SEC wants to bypass the Indian government and send summons directly to Gautam Adani. For this he has also filed a petition in the American court. However, Gautam Adani had asked to negotiate through a lawyer.

WSJ made allegations against Adani

As soon as two allegations were made against Gautam Adani, in June 2025, the American newspaper Wall Street General also completed the work. The newspaper published a news alleging that Gautam Adani was trying to get foreign bribery charges dropped against him.

The newspaper wrote: "Gautam Adani, Asia's second-richest man, is trying to get the Trump administration to drop foreign bribery charges against him. Instead, he faces a new front in his battle with prosecutors: an investigation into whether his companies are buying Iranian petrochemical products."

These three allegations have been made in different years. Hindberg had imposed in 2023. In 2024, the American Securities Exchange Commission and in 2025, WSJ published a report.
