Digital Desk, New Delhi. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he will close Washington's Kennedy Center Performing Arts Center for construction for two years. It's his latest step toward transforming the iconic landmark since returning to the White House.
He announced this on social media. He said his proposal had to be approved by the Kennedy Center's board, which is filled with his hand-picked aides, days after the premiere of "Melania," a documentary about the first lady. Trump himself is the chairman of the center's board of trustees.
What did Trump say?
Trump wrote in his post, "This important decision was taken based on input from many highly respected experts. It will transform a tired, dilapidated and dilapidated center, which was in poor condition both financially and structurally for many years, into a world class bastion of arts, music and entertainment."
Neither Trump nor Trump ally Kennedy Center President Rick Grenell have provided any evidence to support their claims that the building is in poor condition.
Will there be opposition to Trump's decision?
This sudden decision will definitely lead to protests as Trump is changing this popular place. It began as a National Cultural Center, but after the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1964, Congress renamed it a "living memorial" to him. Opened in 1971, the center is open year-round as a public showcase for the arts, including the National Symphony Orchestra.
