Kolkata, IANS. Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Sunday sparked a political debate by claiming that Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee plays a central role in the survival of opposition alliance INDIA.
Speaking to the news agency, Iyer said that without the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, INDIA will lose its relevance. Without Mamata Didi, all the 'I', 'N', 'D', 'I', 'A' of the alliance will disappear. Because Mamata Banerjee is the leader of this alliance.
He also said that many party members support Mamata Banerjee's role in the opposition alliance.
Prominent regional leaders can also play a leading role
He said key regional leaders, including DMK president MK Stalin, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, can also play a leading role in shaping the opposition alliance.
In a sharp comment, Aiyar suggested that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should let leaders of smaller regional parties guide INDIA, instead of trying to capture the top post.

The senior Congress leader also hinted at strained relations with his own party. Citing Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal's comments, Aiyar claimed that they indicate the possibility of disciplinary action against him. It seems they have decided to expel me.
