IPS Sadanand Vasant can become DGP of Maharashtra Police (Photo- ANI)
PTI, New Delhi. National Investigation Agency (NIA) Director General and senior IPS officer Sadanand Vasant Date has been sent back to his parent cadre in Maharashtra.
There is a strong possibility of him becoming the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state after the retirement of current DGP Rashmi Shukla next month.
Date, a 1990 batch IPS officer, was appointed the NIA chief in March 2024. After the retirement of Rashmi Shukla, he will be the senior most IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre.
According to the order issued by the government, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while approving the proposal of the Home Ministry, has approved the premature deputation of Date and sending him back to Maharashtra cadre with immediate effect.
Date, considered the hero of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was awarded the President's Police Medal (Gallantry) for his heroic role during the attack. On the night of 26 November 2008, he was the then Additional Commissioner of Police of Mumbai and was seriously injured during an encounter with terrorists in the Cama Hospital premises.
