Digital Desk, New Delhi. Last month, hundreds of books were damaged by a water leak in the Egyptian antiquities department of the Louvre Museum. This shows the deteriorating condition of the museum. Some time back a theft had exposed the security lapses here.
Expert website La Tribune de l'Art reported that around 400 rare books were affected, which was attributed to the poor condition of the pipes. It said the department had been seeking funds to protect the collection from such risks for a long time, but without success.
Repair work was to be done next year
Francis Steinbach, deputy administrator of the Louvre Museum, said the leaking water pipe was related to one of three rooms in the library of the Egyptian Antiquities Department. “We have identified 300 to 400 artefacts, counting is ongoing,” he said. He acknowledged that the problem had been known for years and said repairs were scheduled for September 2026.
