Administration troubled by people spitting after eating paan in London, demands immediate ban on sale
PTI, London. London Council is worried about people spitting after eating betel leaves in Britain. He has written a letter to the government ministers. The council has demanded an immediate ban on the sale of tobacco and betel leaf.
In a letter to ministers in charge of public health and consumer protection, the council described the harms caused by chewing and spitting betel leaves, ranging from increased cancer rates to severe damage to city centers and the expansion of illegal tobacco supply chains.
The letter said that when spitting occurs on the streets and footpaths become dirty, public health is at risk. When criminal supply chains are allowed to flourish, our residents pay the price.
The letter, addressed to Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Prevention Ashley Dalton and Minister for Employment Rights and Consumer Protection Kate Dearden, highlights that betel spitting leaves unsightly red stains on footpaths and shop fronts, which often cannot be removed even with high-pressure cleaning equipment. Such spots are regularly seen in many areas under the council, including Wembley and Ealing Road.
