Jagran correspondent, Meerut. On June 17, 2009, the Jamaatis set fire to the Rohta gate, accusing them of tearing the Quran. The people of Muslim community created a ruckus from Rohta gate to the district hospital. Police were also pelted with stones while raising religious slogans in the hospital. The then Brahmpuri police station in-charge had registered a case against eight accused and unknown others. In this case, the Additional District Judge sentenced eight convicts to four years imprisonment each after 16 and a half years.

Government lawyer Babita Verma said that a group from Singhawali village of Kankarkheda police station area had gone to the Jamaat. The team was returning on 17 June 2009. People of Jamaat group had stopped at Rohta railway gate to buy fruits etc. The kiosk owner expressed opposition to parking the tractor there. After an altercation, there was a fight between the kiosk owner and the people of Jamaat Dal.

When information about the incident reached Singhawali village, hundreds of people from the Muslim community reached the spot. They blocked Rohta Road and set fire to it while shouting slogans.

The injured were admitted to the district hospital

The police admitted the injured to the district hospital. There too, people of Muslim community created a ruckus and pelted stones at the police. The miscreants had reached Ghantaghar, Jali Kothi and Idgah intersection shouting slogans and pelting stones from the district hospital.

Seeing the atmosphere deteriorating, the police had to resort to lathicharge. On the complaint of the then Brahmpuri police station in-charge, the police had registered a case against other unknown persons, naming Zainul, Nadeem, Sabir, residents of Uncha Saddiq Nagar, Raees, resident of Khatta Road, Rahmat and Shahid, Bhura and Sartaj, residents of Ghanta Wali Gali.
