After 8 Suicides In 2 Years In IIT Kanpur, Every Student Will Now Have 'mental Scanning', Special Team Formed.

Jagran correspondent, Kanpur. Concerned over the incidents of suicide, the IIT administration has now decided to assess the mental health level of all the students.

For this, the team of psychiatrists and counselors of the institute will contact each student. Apart from teachers and staff, this team will also be active in hostels, laboratories, classrooms, libraries and wherever counseling is needed.

Will take steps accordingly. 24 hour assistance will be provided with the help of the Center for Mental Health and Wellbeing established in the institute.

IIT Kanpur has seen the suicide of eight youth, including researchers from the institute, in the last two years. In an attempt to find a solution to the problem, a meeting was held with Director Prof. It has been held under the chairmanship of Manindra Aggarwal. In which it was decided that a special campaign should be run to maintain the mental health of the students.

According to Dr. Alok Bajpai, a psychiatrist who has been working with IIT for the last two decades, the team of psychiatrists and psychologists will establish contact with all the students in the next six months to one year.

Feedback will also be taken from the students and on the basis of detailed data, consideration will be given to providing special assistance to them. During counselling, it was observed that IIT students have more problems related to studies as well as family and social reasons. IIT currently employs 10 full-time professional psychologists.
