Jagran correspondent, Noida. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is affecting people's health in developing countries like India. The figures are quite worrying. Data shows that more than 3 million deaths worldwide were linked to AMR in 2019. If awareness about antimicrobial resistance is not spread in time, the future will be very worrying.

Dr. Renu Aggarwal, former CMS and senior consultant of the district hospital, spread awareness about healthy India in the Sector 27 Club organized by Dainik Jagran.

He said that many people recover from infections like cold, cough, fever or viral infection in four to five days. But, in an attempt to stop the virus quickly, people go to nearby medical stores and consume various types of medicines.

In such a situation, if the health worsens again after a month or two, the patient starts buying medicines based on the old medicines and taking them again. When they feel better, they stop taking them. This negligence keeps making patients sick.

He expressed concern that if antibiotics remain ineffective against diseases, it will take 15 to 20 years for new antibiotics to be developed. Therefore, people are avoiding investing more in pharmaceutical companies due to the long wait, difficult and very expensive process.

Trust in generic medicines is also necessary

Former CMS Dr. Renu Aggarwal told that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has opened generic medicine shops at different places. But, people have a misconception that these medicines do not work immediately. Clearing this misconception on a forum of Dainik Jagran, he said that testing of generic medicines is done in big, authorized labs. These are launched in the market only after getting government approval. These medicines are better and cheaper than other medicines.

As I knew, medicines provide relief when one is ill, but surprisingly they also have a fixed course or number of days. Not completing the course even after illness can lead to serious health problems. -Seema Singhal

Former CMS Dr. Renu said that generic medicines are as beneficial as other medicines. But, people do not trust generic medicines easily. Today's awareness session was very good. Everyone should take part in this.

I thank Dainik Jagran that they invited Dr. Renu Aggarwal, former CMS of the District Hospital, as a keynote speaker and gave necessary information in this important awareness campaign. This newspaper, a favorite of millions of readers, always runs campaigns for the welfare of the country and society.

Dainik Jagran has run a very good campaign on antibiotics. The best thing was to use generic medicines. As Dr. Renu told, one should not be hasty in taking medicines for cold, cough, flu and fever. I will keep this in mind in future also.

Dr. Anurag Sagar, MD, Medicine, District Hospital, Sector 39, made the elderly, youth, women and other staff aware about the use of antibiotics at Prateek Wisteria Society, Sector 76. He made a special appeal to the people that in this modern era, no one should take medicine on the basis of information received from AI (Artificial Intelligence) or internet media platforms.

Repeatedly taking medicines based on old prescriptions or incomplete information, even after getting relief for some time, can cause significant harm to health. Meanwhile, an elder asked whether taking antibiotics is always harmful.

He replied that if you fall ill, first consult a doctor and then get a blood test done on his advice. Based on the report, the patient should take the medicine prescribed by the specialist and not buy the medicine himself. This is because each disease is mainly caused by a different infection. During the awareness program which lasted for more than one and a half hour in the club house of the society, people asked many questions and got answers to them.

AMR is a big problem today. It is important for everyone to be aware about this. Dainik Jagran organized an excellent awareness program in the Society today. After listening to the senior doctor, the staff and other people will definitely take care.

The way the senior doctor gave many examples to explain the topic in detail was very impressive. The most important thing in case of illness is to avoid taking old prescription medicines from any medical store.

I took a lot of medicines for an illness many years ago. Out of 15-16 medicines, around 12 stopped working. A senior doctor looked after me and conducted all the necessary tests and treated me successfully.
