Manish Kumar, Patna. A major step has been taken towards making the property tax assessment system in the municipal corporation area more systematic, logical and transparent. Reclassification of a total of 112 roads in the capital has been approved. After the permission of the Urban Development and Housing Department, Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena has issued a formal order in this regard, which will be considered effective from May 19, 2025.

According to the order issued, 43 major arterial roads and 69 main roads were reclassified for the purpose of property tax assessment. This reclassification of roads has been done keeping in mind their commercial use, traffic pressure, road width and surrounding urban development.

It was clarified in the order that according to the provisions of Bihar Municipal Property Tax Assessment, Collection and Recovery Rules-2013, it is mandatory for the Municipal Corporation to review the classification of roads every five years. This process has been completed under this provision. Multipliers of property tax are determined on the basis of reclassification of roads and tax is determined accordingly.

The Municipal Corporation also clarified that the reclassification of roads will also affect the property tax already collected. Also, if necessary, further amendments can be made in the list of roads with the approval of the state government. The Municipal Corporation believes that this decision will make the property tax assessment system more equitable and transparent. With this, there will be uniformity in the tax system and the revenue collection of the Municipal Corporation is also expected to increase significantly.
