Jagran correspondent, Katihar. The Ashoka Pillar, a symbol of the country's identity and pride and considered a symbol of national identity, has been waiting for inauguration in Katihar city for the last 15 years. Today, this grand Ashoka Pillar established in the premises of Verma Refugee Colony, the upgraded middle school located at Tingachhiya of the city, is a victim of neglect. Due to lack of maintenance its color has also started fading.

Why hasn't the inauguration taken place?

It is said that the people who had migrated from Burma (Myanmar) had built the Ashoka Pillar with public cooperation in the year 2010. School Principal Dinesh Dubey said that the pillar was installed in the school premises on the initiative of local people, but till date it could not be formally inaugurated.

Ashoka Pillar attracts people's attention

Local resident Niranjan Pauddar said that this Ashoka Pillar attracts attention from a distance due to its grandeur. A park was constructed around it and a water fountain was also installed. They claim that it is the only grand Ashoka pillar of its kind in Bihar.

Sushil Kumar Modi had got it established

Told that this Ashoka Pillar was established on the instructions of the then Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, but despite years having passed, it could not be inaugurated. Former ward councilor Rajendra Verma, social workers Mohit Verma, Rinku Mandal and Jyoti Kumari said that the poor condition of this place associated with the memory of the people displaced from Verma is very sad. If conservation and beautification had been done in time, this site could have become the identity of the city.

The matter was not in my knowledge. It will be equipped and inaugurated soon.
