Husband Sunil Kumar Mahato, the head of Nayagaon Western Panchayat under Sahadei Elderly block of Vaishali district, has been arrested by the police on charges of illegal extortion, assault, snatching and using caste indicative words in the name of adding name in the housing scheme. The SC-ST police station has sent the accused to judicial custody.
SC-ST police station chief said that the arrested accused is Sunil Kumar Mahato, son of late Vijay Mahato, resident of Nayagaon West. In this regard, Chandan Kumar, son of lawyer Ram, resident of Nayagaon Saini Pokhar of Desari police station area, had lodged an FIR in the SC-ST police station on 18 February 2025.
According to the FIR, Sanjay Kumar, Panchayat employment servant cum in-charge housing assistant of Nayagaon Western Panchayat, called Chandan Kumar to the residence of Mukhiya Rita Devi to add his name in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. On reaching there, Sanjay Kumar demanded two thousand rupees in exchange for adding his name to the scheme. When the victim refused to give the money, the amount was increased to Rs 5,000 and he was abused using caste related words.
When she protested, accused Sunil Kumar Mahato, his son Chandan Kumar and Panchayat employment servant Sanjay Kumar together beat up the victim. It is alleged that during this time Chandan Kumar took out a pistol from his waist and placed it on the victim's temple and threatened to kill him. Whereas Sunil Mahato tried to strangulate his throat with a pot. The victim's life was saved due to the intervention of passersby.
The victim alleges that after this he was tied to a pillar, spit on the ground and his mobile phone and Rs 500 were snatched. On receiving the information, the family members reached the spot and the accused fled from there.
Acting on the basis of the FIR, the police arrested the head husband Sunil Kumar Mahato and sent him to jail. Raids are being conducted to arrest other accused in the case.
