Jagran correspondent, Bareilly. The hobby of kite flying is years old and the Manjha industry associated with it remains the identity of the district. While the cotton manjha prepared using the traditional Indian method is considered safe, the nylon manjha made using the so-called Chinese method is being said to be deadly.

In recent years, debate over its use has intensified following incidents of people being injured by nylon ropes. Despite this, due to cheap prices, its demand is increasing in the market, which is also affecting the employment of local artisans. The traditional Manjha prepared in the district is sent to many big cities of the country.

About 50 thousand people are associated with this cottage industry in the district and the annual business is about Rs 10 crore. Arshad Hussain, president of Manjha Mazdoor Kalyan Samiti, who runs a business near Eidgah in Bakarganj, said that what is commonly called Chinese Manjha is actually made from fishing nylon thread.

It is made extremely sharp and dangerous by coating it with iron and glass filings. Its big factories are in cities like Bengaluru and Surat, from where it is reaching across the country at low prices. Inam Ali, who was winding thread with a machine in Saraikham of the city, said that there are people all over the country who are fond of kite flying. Even today, this business related to kite flying is feeding a large number of people in the district.
