Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to depute civil judges and call judicial officers from neighboring Jharkhand and Odisha to deal with 80 lakh claims and objections in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi took note of the letter from the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, which said that the 250 district judges deployed in the SIR exercise will take about 80 days to deal with the claims and objections. Considering the serious situation and paucity of time, the bench allowed deployment of civil judges to complete the process.

What did the bench say to the Calcutta High Court judge?

The Supreme Court bench asked the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to request his counterparts from Jharkhand and Odisha to call judicial officers of equal rank to deal with the situation. Also directed the Election Commission to bear the expense of deploying judicial officers from Jharkhand and Odisha.

The court also allowed the Election Commission to publish the final voter list on February 28 and clearly said that the poll panel can release a supplementary list as the verification process progresses.

On February 20, frustrated by the ongoing tussle between the West Bengal government and the Election Commission, the Supreme Court issued a direction to deploy sitting and former district judges to assist the poll panel in the controversy-ridden SIR process in the state.
