Trial run of Bhopal Metro.

Digital Desk, Bhopal. Passengers please note.... Bhopal Metro is ready for your first journey on platform number one of AIIMS Metro Station. From December 21, you will be able to enjoy the metro journey in Bhopal like other big metros. Although, this is just the beginning, but the happiness of the people and the development of the capital is now going to take wings. Gradually our metro will become prosperous and the entire Bhopal district and surrounding areas will be connected to the metro. This will give new impetus to the development of the city. We will also be able to say with pride that our city is no less than Delhi-Mumbai.

Journey from 2009 till now

The metro project was conceived in 2009. Orders for making DPR were placed in 2011 and the first work order was placed in 2018. After about eight years, the public is going to get the gift of Bhopal Metro. While MP Metro Corporation started the metro project work simultaneously in Bhopal and Indore, but here also Indore won first.

Metro was inaugurated in Indore about seven months ago. Now it is the turn of Bhopal Metro, which will be inaugurated on 20th December i.e. today and the people of the city will be able to travel in it from 21st December. Since we are talking about the ups and downs of the project, let us tell you that the Bhopal Metro project has gone through the slow pace of project construction, lack of coordination between various departments, frequent changes in management and Covid-19.

Covid 19 put first break on work

Work on the Bhopal Metro project along the Priority Corridor of the Orange Line began in 2019. This work was to be completed in 2022, but due to Covid-19, the project work came to a complete halt in 2020. Similar was the situation in 2021, but the project work was started again at the end of the year, but due to non-availability of labour, the work kept lagging behind.

Workers were found, but the machine did not arrive on time.

Somehow, laborers were found for the work of the metro project in 2022. After this the work on the project gained momentum. However, in the meantime, sometimes there were problems with machines and sometimes with labour, but by this time the pillars of the Priority Corridor had been erected. The girders had been laid. The work of laying the tracks continued. Overall, 70 percent work of the elevated corridor from Subhash Nagar to Rani Kamalapati Metro Railway Station had been completed.

Election pressure comes again, first trial run on 3 October 2023

Bhopal Metro project also had to face the pressure of Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections. The then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took the first trial run of the metro on 3 October 2023 before the elections. During this time, he traveled by metro from Subhash Nagar to Rani Kamalapati station. Then the Chief Minister had said that it would be started by April-May 2024.

Length of Priority Corridor increased by 3.4 km

After the visit of the then Chief Minister, the length of the Priority Corridor was increased. Earlier the metro was to be run for about 4 kilometers from Subhash Nagar to Rani Kamlapati Metro Station, but later the length of the project was increased to 3.4 kilometers till AIIMS Metro Station. For this reason the length of this priority corridor is 7.4 kilometers.

Steel bridge work was slowest

The priority corridor is now from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS. Meanwhile, a steel bridge was to be placed over the railway line. This work was to be done by the Railways. Railways took more than a year to install this steel bridge. Meanwhile, Metro continued the work of building the elevated corridor from AIIMS. After laying the steel bridge, the bridge was connected to the elevated corridor.

The earliest deadline to complete the Bhopal Metro project was 2022. Then this work was to be completed by 2023, but it did not happen. After this the deadline of April-May 2024 was fixed. Even then the work was not completed. After this October 2024 happened. Then on July 2025, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav did the trial run of the metro.
