Anchal Singh, Jammu. In the coming time, electric wires will not be visible on the poles in Jammu city. All the wires are being laid underground. This will not only ensure uninterrupted power supply, but will also enhance the beauty of the city. The city will get relief from the web of wires.
The government has started the work of laying electric wires underground in various areas of Jammu city under the Revised Distribution Area Scheme (RDSS). Till January, 118.32 circuit kilometers of wire has been laid. After laying these 11 KV wires underground, no wire will remain on the pole. From these, connections will be given to people's homes.
After the completion of this project, the old wires will be removed from the poles. Its benefit will be that the power supply affected after a slight storm or rain will improve. Barring some major reason, power supply will not be affected. Technical losses will be less.
Along with laying wires, Jammu and Kashmir Electricity Development Department is also installing smart meters. More than 6.5 lakh meters have been installed by February 2026. The government has given this information in the recently released assembly session.
309.29 km wires will be underground in Jammu
Ministry of Power has sanctioned Rs 5200 crore to JKPDD under RDSS for improving the infrastructure including these cabling projects. For this project, approval has been given to lay approximately 309.29 circuit kilometer long 11 KV underground wire.
By January 2026, work of 118.34 circuit kilometers has been completed. The project is being implemented by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) under ED-2 Urban Jammu Package. The work mainly focuses on Jammu South and other identified areas of the city, especially for improving the 11 KV distribution network. The project is part of the centrally sponsored scheme RDSS and Jammu Smart City initiative.
