This ambitious project is being developed by the National Highway Authority (NHAI) under the Bharatmala scheme of the central government. Pillar construction has almost been completed where the expressway starts in Darbhanga.

At this place, this expressway will pass over the Darbhanga-Sakri railway section near Kakarghati railway station. The special thing is that in the same area, CAT-II system is also being installed within a radius of about 300 meters for Darbhanga Airport, which will improve air operations even during bad weather.

Will connect North and South Bihar

Darbhanga–Amas Expressway (NH-119D) is the first access-control greenfield expressway in the state. This project will establish direct and fast connectivity between North and South Bihar, which will not only make travel easier but will also give a new impetus to economic activities.

Where will the route go from to?

This expressway will start from Amas in Gaya district, which is located on the Delhi–Kolkata National Highway (NH-19), and will reach Bela Nawada area of Darbhanga district, which is near NH-27. Through this, Aurangabad-Gaya area will be directly connected to Darbhanga, the major city of Mithilanchal.

will pass through these districts

This approximately 189 km long expressway will pass through seven districts of Bihar—Aurangabad, Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur and Darbhanga. It will cross river Ganga through the Kachchi Dargah-Bidupur six-lane bridge in Patna.

Cost, lane and design

This project is estimated to cost around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 crore. It will be a 4-lane expressway in the initial phase, although it has been designed with plans to expand it to 6-lanes in the future.

Construction status and goals

The expressway is being prepared in four different packages. About 40 percent work between Patna and Gaya has been completed. In some parts the work was affected due to land acquisition, but now the construction work is being carried forward on priority basis. The official target is to complete the project by March 2026.

Common people will get big benefits

After the operationalization of the expressway, the travel time from Gaya to Darbhanga will reduce from 5–6 hours to about 2.5 to 3 hours. This will strengthen the connectivity between Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga airports. Besides, trade and industry will also get huge benefits due to ease of transportation of goods between North and South Bihar.
