Jails are becoming battlefield under the rule of AAP government: Bajwa

State Bureau, Chandigarh. Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab government over the violent clash between prisoners in the Central Jail, Ludhiana.

He said that this incident is a serious proof of the complete collapse of the jail administration system of the state. Terming the incident as a political and administrative failure, Bajwa raised serious questions on the role and functioning of Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.

The fact that bricks and stones were openly available inside a high-security prison is evidence that the threat was not only ignored, but could have been avoided altogether, he said.

What is even more worrying is that the jail administration completely failed to control the situation in time. The senior Congress leader said the Ludhiana incident was not an isolated incident but part of a dangerous trend of increasing violence inside Punjab jails during the tenure of the AAP government.

He reminded that in April 2024, two prisoners were killed in a late night clash between prisoners in Sangrur jail, while two others were seriously injured.

He warned that repeated incidents of violence inside prisons indicate a complete breakdown of discipline, governance and corrections system. He demanded immediate corrective action, fixing responsibility and a comprehensive review of the prison security system.
