The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Mayangalambam Rishikant Singh. He was married to Chingnu Haokip, a girl from the Kuki tribal community. After marriage, she changed her name to Ginminthang.

Police said that Rishikant Singh was kidnapped from his house on Wednesday and shot dead. The United Kuki National Army is suspected to be behind this massacre.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla expressed deep grief over the murder of Rishikant and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family. He said that the case has been handed over to NIA. The Governor said that an intensive search operation has been started from Wednesday night itself to nab the culprits.

A coordinated campaign is being run by the state and central governments and action is being taken on a war footing. All necessary measures are being taken as per law. Local people told that Rishikant had returned to Churachandpur from Nepal with his wife on January 19. Some local groups allowed him to live with his wife.

The deceased's father Mayangalambam Tambi Singh told journalists that he was staying at his wife's house in Churachandpur after coming from Nepal. He never informed about his whereabouts. He was kidnapped by three armed men on Wednesday evening.

The kidnappers also took his wife along, but later threw her out of the moving vehicle. A purported video of the horrific incident has been circulated on the internet media, in which the Meitei youth can be seen with folded hands begging for his life before being shot.
