Jagran Bureau, New Delhi. The Central Government has taken a big step towards strengthening the railway infrastructure. In the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, three important railway projects worth Rs 9,072 crore of the states were approved. Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh will get the biggest benefit from this.
A part of Maharashtra will also be connected to it. These schemes will increase the rail network by 307 kilometers. Connectivity of about 5,407 villages will improve, whose total population is about 98 lakh. These projects are targeted to be completed by 2030-31. The government claims that employment opportunities will also be created at the local level during the construction.
Increasing line capacity on busy railway routes
The aim of all three projects is to increase line capacity on busy railway routes. The third and fourth railway lines will be laid between Punarakh and Kiul in Bihar. This route is already quite busy. With the construction of additional lines, the movement of trains will be smooth and delays will be reduced. The third and fourth lines will be constructed from Gamharia to Chandil in Jharkhand. This area is a big center of industrial activities. By increasing the line capacity here, the speed of goods trains will increase.
The third project involves doubling of the railway line from Gondia in Maharashtra to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. This route is an important link connecting Central India. Doubling will provide relief to both passenger and goods trains. These three projects will strengthen the rail network in eight districts of four states. Construction of additional lines will increase the operational capacity of the Railways. The timetable of trains will improve. Goods transportation will increase. Right now the traffic pressure on many routes is very high.
Multi-modal connectivity will be increased
The projects have been prepared under the PM Gati Shakti Plan, which aims to increase multi-modal connectivity and reduce logistics costs. Goods like coal, steel, iron ore, cement, fertilizers and food grains are transported through these routes. With the increase in capacity, it will be possible to transport 52 million tonnes of additional freight every year.
It is also considered important from environmental point of view. Dependence on road transport will reduce. According to government estimates, there will be a reduction in oil imports by about 6 crore liters. There will be a reduction of about 30 crore kilograms in carbon emissions. This is considered to have an impact equivalent to planting one crore trees. Tourism will also get a boost. Access to places like Jabalpur's Kachnar Shiv Temple, Kanha and Pench National Parks, Dhuandhar Falls, Bargi Dam and Jharkhand's Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary will be easy.
Approval for expansion of Gujarat Metro
The Union Cabinet has approved the metro extension from GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tech) City to Shahpur under Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited. This corridor will be 3.33 km long at a cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore and three elevated stations will be built in it. This will further strengthen the connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
It is believed that by 2029, about 23,702 passengers will use it daily and by 2041, 58,059 passengers will use it. About one thousand people will get employment during the construction. More than 250 people will also get work in operation and maintenance. The project will be completed in four years.
