PTI, New Delhi. The central government is in talks with states to improve the e-way bill framework. This will be discussed in the next meeting of the GST Council.

The Economic Survey released last week said the next step in GST reforms could focus on redefining the e-way bill system as a means of facilitating smooth freight movement rather than merely a means of enforcement and control.

E-way bill reforms will reduce regulation of the freight transport system to a great extent. This will reduce costs and delays for business. Also, there will be effective and non-interference monitoring for tax administration.

“We are working with states on e-way bill reforms and will place it before the GST Council,” the source said. The last meeting of the GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister and consisting of State Ministers, was held on September 3, 2025. In this, it was decided to cut tax rates on 375 items and rationalize the slabs.

E-way bill system has emerged as an effective digital option. This made online monitoring of goods movement possible. This supported the objectives of tax administration without re-imposing physical barriers across state borders.

Under GST, it is mandatory for a person carrying goods worth more than Rs 50,000 to obtain an e-way bill. This document is required to be obtained from the GST portal by the GST registered person or the goods transporter before transporting the goods.
