New York Times, New York. The dominance of Chinese universities is visible in a global ranking based on higher education. Chinese universities are surpassing American universities.
Eight Chinese universities have found place in the top ten list. Whereas Harvard, considered the most prestigious university in the world, has reached the third position. Among the top ten is Canada's University of Toronto, which is at the last position. This list is a worrying sign for the American academy.
There are eight Chinese universities in the top ten list of the Center for Science and Technology Studies of Leiden University in the Netherlands. This change is being seen at a time when the Trump administration has cut research funding for American schools.
Phil Batty, chief global affairs officer of the British organization Times Higher Education, said, 'A big change is coming. This is a new world order of global dominance in higher education and research.'
Educators and experts say this change is a problem not only for American universities, but for the entire country. If we look at the beginning of this century, we will find that a global university ranking based on published journal articles was very different.
The top ten contained seven American universities, with Harvard University in first place. Only one Chinese university, Zhejiang University, remained in the top 25. Today this Chinese university ranks first in this list.
