Anuj Tiwari, Ranchi. When medical science and the readiness of doctors work together, miracles become possible. A similar miracle was seen in RIMS, where the team of Neurosurgery Department saved the life of a 20-year-old youth who arrived with a bullet stuck in his head.

This case has become one of the few cases not only in Jharkhand but also in the country, where despite being shot in the head, the patient not only survived but also started talking and eating normally after the surgery.

Criminals entered the house and shot

Gopal Kumar Ganjhu, a resident of Chatra district, was shot at by criminals after entering his house at midnight on 29th December. The bullet pierced Gopal's cheek and got stuck in the back of his head.

The family immediately took him out and after a long, risky journey, reached Reims in the night itself. Despite his critical condition, Gopal was conscious, which was shocking even for the doctors.

Treatment started at 11 am, surgery took place the next day

After reaching RIMS, detailed medical evaluation of Gopal was started at around 11 am on 29th December. CT scan and other tests revealed that the bullet was stuck inside the head and the situation could deteriorate at any moment. After this the neurosurgery department decided to immediately perform surgery. Gopal underwent complex brain surgery on December 30 itself.

The surgery lasted for more than six hours, in which doctors took out the bullet stuck in the head with utmost care. The biggest challenge during the surgery was to ensure that there was no additional damage to the nerves and vital parts of the brain.

Shocking recovery after surgery

Gopal's condition has improved rapidly after the surgery. The very next day he regained consciousness, started talking to doctors and family members and also started eating food on his own. This scene was no less than a dream for the family.

Dr. Anand Prakash, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, said that he has seen many gunshot cases in his long medical experience, but this case is extremely rare.

He said that often in cases of headshot, the injured dies on the spot or goes into a coma. But in this case, the patient reached the hospital conscious despite being shot in the head, which is a one in a million case.

it looks blurry right now

According to Dr. Anand Prakash, it would not be wrong to say that this is a miracle of medical science and teamwork. He told that after the surgery the patient is completely stable and if everything remains normal, he will soon be discharged from the hospital.

However, Gopal's vision is slightly affected due to the bullet passing through his cheek. At present his vision is blurred. Doctors say that the nerves of the eyes may have been partially damaged in the path of the bullet. The good thing is that this problem is not permanent and there is every possibility of improvement in vision after treatment in the eye department.

For Gopal's relatives, this experience is like coming out of a nightmare. The son whom he saw dying is now smiling. The relatives expressed their gratitude towards the doctors and medical staff of RIMS and said that they have given a new life to Gopal.

RIMS' expertise again confirmed

This case once again proves that the Neurosurgery department of RIMS is capable of handling even the most serious cases. The impossible was made possible with the help of timely treatment, team of experienced doctors and modern technology.

Despite the horrific incident of being shot, Gopal is alive today, recovering and returning towards the future. This is not just the story of a patient, but a story of hope, faith and the victory of medical science.
